Very Warm Temperatures, Then Weekend Snow?

EVENING UPDATE:  January 31, 2012, 6:53 p.m.

It hit 59° degrees today!

As I mentioned in my blog this morning, a rain or snow system would be moving in Friday and Saturday.

The latest guidance is suggesting it will be snow and not rain.  As for amounts, it’s still four days out, but some accumulation is expected from the Quad Cities southward.  However, contrary to some reports, this does not look like a significant winter storm.

I’ll post more when better information is available.

After a record setting high temperature Monday of 60° in the Quad Cities, we’re going to see another warm one by January standards today with highs well into the 50s to near 60°.  However, no records Tuesday as the record high for the date is 69° in the metro area.

A cold front passing through with some drizzle or light rain Tuesday afternoon will drop highs for the rest of the week back into the 40s.  While a change from 60°, remember that the average high this time of the year is around freezing (32°).

We can expect dry, winter weather for the first few days of February.  What a change from this time last year when we were blasted with blizzard conditions and 18.4″ of snow at the end of the January and for the first few days of February.

There is a storm arriving this weekend that could bring us rain and snow.  Just think, if we hadn’t had this recent warmth, we could be talking about a major snowstorm.  However, at this point, four days out, rain or snow is in the forecast.

Anthony, I’m getting excited, too, but I have to drive to Davenport on Sunday morning and back home Sunday evening, so do you know anything more about the time of arrival for the snow?

    Amy,

The snow is Saturday and Sunday’s high will be well above freezing for melting to take place.

What snow? I’m understanding any snow will be light ( dusting - that comes as the storm winds down Saturday night ) and the majority of the precipitation will fall as rain.

This winter has honestly sucked lol. I think we have gotten 1″+ of snow 3 times so far this year. Kinda feels like I live in Mississippi or Alabama..
